Catastrophe Relief in Constitución, Chile

Well, for sure this is a little late in coming, but we've been all-systems-go here at the Mendoza base ever since the earthquake on February 27 with our near next-door neighbour Chile. We've been sending team after team there to volunteer in the coastal city of Constitución, which not only suffered the devastating quake but a 15m tsunami about twenty minutes later which pretty much wiped out an entire portion of the city.

You see that kind of stuff on tv, you know, happening to other people, in countries really far away. It's a little different to be looking with your own eyes at the bare space where heaps of houses used to be, or seeing doorway after doorway marked in red with the number of dead found inside, or to sit and listen to a family tell you about how their daughters died when a wall fell on them in the dead of night.

It hasn't been a time for the faint-hearted. We've all been tested to our limits. Both physically, as we help families deal with the mountain of rubble that used to be their home, or spend hour after hour packing and loading donations, and spiritually and emotionally, as we visit and counsel frightened people, place food boxes into the hands of the needy, or spend time with the kids in different neighbourhoods, still traumatised after the event and too afraid to sleep inside, playing games with them and doing fun dramas, even as we pray with their parents.

Our red volunteer vests have gotten to be quite famous, really, around the city, and we have amazing stories to tell. People are so open, now. Everyone wants to be prayed for, everyone wants to hear about Jesus. God has shaken up the city but it's changed something in the spiritual atmosphere, and changed it for good. We've heard sad stories and seen sad things, but we've also seen people with changed hearts, and heard stories of God's incredible grace and saving hand. On April 11, the Mayor of the city actually formally handed over the authority of the city to Jesus Christ. That's no small thing, not in God's eyes. And not in ours either. The Lord's mercy and mighty blessing are at work in Chile, and, even as another team from Mendoza base leaves to travel to Constitución and continue this labour of love there, we'll continue to be part of it.

Bueno, seguro que esto es un poco tarde, pero hemos estado corriendo como locos desde el 27 de Febrero cuando pasó el terremoto ahí en Chile. Hemos estado mandando equipo tras equipo para que sean voluntarios en la ciudad costal de Constitución, no solamente sufrió el terremoto pero también un tsunami 20 minutos después que destruyó una buena porción de la ciudad.

Ves cosas asi en la tele, viste, pasando a las personas, en paises bien lejos. Es un poquito diferente, ver con tus propios ojos el espacio donde antes habia muchas casas, o ver puerta tras puerta marcada con la cantidad de muertos que habian descubierto adentro, o sentarte y escuchar mientras una familia te cuenta acerca de la maner que sus dos hijas murieron cuando una pared se les cayó.

No ha sido un tiempo para timidos. Hemos sido probados hasta llegar a nuestros limites. Ya sea en lo físico, cuando ayudamos a familias con los escombros que eran sus casas, o pasar horas y horas seleccionando y empacando donaciones de comida. También emocionalmente y espiritualmente mientras visitamos y aconsejamos a gente con miedo, llevamos cajas de comida a las manos de los necesitados, o pasamos tiempo con niños en diferentes barrios, que quedaron traumatisados después del evento. Todavía tienen demasiado miedo de dormir adentro, asi que hacemos juegos y obras, y oramos con sus padres.

Nuestros chalecos rojos de voluntarios ahora son bastantes famosos en la ciudad, y tenemos historias asombrosas para contar. La gente está tan abierta. Todos quieren oración, todos quieren escuchar de Jesús. Dios ha sacudido a la ciudad y eso ha cambiado algo en lo espiritual, y es bueno! Hemos escuchado historias tristes y hemos visto cosas tristes, pero también hemos visto a personas con corazones cambiados, y escuchado historias de la gracia increíble de Dios y su mano salvador. El 11 de Abril el Intendente de la ciudad formalmente entregó la autoridad de la ciudad a Jesucristo. Eso no es pequeña cosa en los ojos de Dios. Y tampoco en los nuestros. La misericordia y bendición poderosa de Dios están obrando en Chile, y, mientras que otro equipo sale de la base de Mendoza para viajar a Constitución y seguir con esta obra de amor ahí, nosotros vamos a seguir siendo parte.
